Esparanza is a young girl living a privileged life in Mexico. She lives in a beautiful home with servants, has the most beautiful dresses and a father who dotes on her.
One night everything changes and she and her Mother flee to California and become migrant workers, living in temporary accommodation. Everything depends on you doing your share on the fields. The work is hard, the hours are long and her Mum isn’t well.
In her new home everyone is in the same boat and they help each other as much as they can. They have food, even if it is mainly the crop they are picking. Esparanza works hard and always does her best.
Life is a challenge but as the title suggests Esparanza is able to rise up to her challenges and there is much hope for the future.
Recommended for age 8+. I read it to my daughter after I had read through myself. We had to have a box of tissues between us.
